Rural New Underwood Grass Fire

   The New Underwood Volunteer Fire Department responded to a report of a wildland fire in the 6800 block of Elk Creek Rd, Unincorporated Meade County SD on    July 20, 2022 at 1:08 p.m. 

   Upon arrival firefighters observed a wind driven fire burning in cured grass and immediately struck a 2nd alarm, bringing additional help from Pennington and Meade County Fire Departments.

   The fire threatened infrastructure, residential areas and caused damage to ranching assets.

   Firefighters dealing with temperatures in the mid 90 degrees Fahrenheit and wind gust of up to 35 miles per hour, controlled the fire at  828 acres.

   No injuries to firefighters, civilians or domestic animals were reported

   Agencies responding included Pennington County 911, Meade County Dispatch, New Underwood Volunteer Fire Department, Meade County Sheriff’s Office, Meade County Emergency Management, Meade County Highway Department,  Box Elder Police Department, Hereford Volunteer Fire Department, Piedmont Volunteer Fire Department, Elm Springs Volunteer Fire Department, Rapid Valley Volunteer Fire Department, Box Elder Volunteer Fire Department, Wall Volunteer Fire Department, Ellsworth Airforce Base Fire Department, Black Hawk Volunteer Fire Department, North Haines Volunteer Fire Department, Whispering Pines Volunteer Fire Department, and Doty Volunteer Fire Department.   

Johnson Siding Volunteer Fire Department, Silver City Volunteer Fire Department, Hill City Volunteer Fire Department, Rapid City Fire Department, Rockerville Volunteer Fire Department, West River Electrical Cooperative, South Dakota Department of Public Safety: Highway Patrol and Wildland Fire, local ranchers and neighbors.
