OSHA virtual public hearing beginning on Nov. 12

Well, the summer has flown by in a hurry. At time of writing this, kids are just starting back to school. It has been a busy month with a lot going on and we had to schedule in some extra meetings. We are also just finishing up with the county fair here, which I am sure many can relate, seems like we need a few days to recover from that. Having kids participating and all of the standby events for the fire department it gets busy for a week.

On the topic of fair/community celebrations, we had some good conversation on lightning and weather policy with some board members. If you have an outdoor event the board / organizers or your fire department leadership, if they are involved, can contact your area weather service and get a daily spot forecast. They will also contact a primary contact and inform them when a storm is approaching the area. That was beneficial for our fair, as there were multiple nights where storms approached and two of events had to be stopped a little short or delayed to get everyone to safety.

A few weeks ago we meet in Chadron and had Fire School and E-board meetings. These meetings are where we go through every evaluation from every class at Fire School. It is always great to go through all of these evaluations to see what the student’s thoughts and ideas are. It does help the Fire School Committee to plan for the future and do everything they can to make it the best that it can be. At this meeting we also work on budgets and get them ready for Conference. Reminder Conference is coming up quick, get registered and get your reservations made in Gering.

With the special session going on in the Nebraska legislature this year, we have had some additional meetings to discuss what is going on. Big thanks to Jerry and Ryan for all of your work in dealing with this special session. Also, thanks to all who went to testify at the hearings. I am sure they will have article explaining some things that they can explain much better than I could.

You will probably see a few things in the paper, as well as constant contact, about wanting our membership to take a survey. This survey is about the print edition of the paper. We need to hear from you. Please, it will only take a few minutes to submit a response. We need to hear from the membership about the possibility of moving to an electronic edition of the Nebraska Firefighter. If we would move to an only electronic edition, it would be the same paper, but, you would read it on your computer/tablet/phone. Having an electronic only edition would save the NSVFA costs on the printing and postage costs. So you would still receive the same product, but, you could access it anywhere that you have an internet connection. Please take the time to take the survey; we need to hear from you.

Also, I am sure some you are tired of hearing of OSHA, but, it is still something that we need to keep an eye on. OSHA is doing a virtual public hearing beginning on Nov. 12th, 2024. If you would like to be a part in testifying, please do, the way I read it you need to submit a written request by Sept. 27th to testify. Also, keep an eye on the NVFC notifications for more webinars and information.

   Thanks, Stay Safe.

Shad Bryner,

NSVFA President
