Local and Legislative Discussions

Sooner or later, we knew it would be coming. I hope you all made it through the big blast of January winter. Plenty of postponed activities, including our SDFA Winter Board Meeting.

Winter weather always makes a good discussion for preparation on what to do on cold weather calls. The carbon monoxide alarms, smoke odor, burst pipes, slippery conditions on the incident scene and many other topics. Do you have salt sand in a compartment?

January started the legislative session. The session was just getting a good start when I wrote this article. We will try to keep updates on our website.

There are some items we are keeping an eye on that directly involve the fire service and may involve our input. A presumptive cancer and illness bill; Autonomous (self-driving) vehicle; Simplifying the Firefighter license plate process and include retired firefighters.

February and March have several training opportunities coming up.

The National Fallen Firefighters Foundation will be hosting free classes in Pierre on Feb. 24-25 at the Law Enforcement Training Center. Taking Care of Our Own on Saturday the 24th, followed by Local Assistance State Team (LAST) on Sunday the 25th

Registration information can be found in the paper and on the SDFA websites.

If you are planning to attend one or both days, a block of rooms is available until Feb. 10th at the AmericInn Hotel in Fort Pierre. Mention the SD-LAST class when making reservations.

The SD Pipeline Association will be holding their annual response training sessions across the state. Check the SD Pipeline Association website for the February dates and locations near you.

Wildland training sessions and weekends will be coming up and in March around the state. Check with the state wildland office for course offerings.

A reminder to get your PPE State Fire Assistance Grant acceptance letters submitted to the Fire Marshal’s office.

The $1,000 High School scholarship applications are due on March 15th. Check the SDFA website for details.

   Thank you and stay safe,

Charlie Kludt,

SDFA President
